ESL Student Blog: Fall vs. Fell
The verb ‘
fall
’ is quite common in English and is learnt at the basic levels. ‘Fall’ is an irregular verb. Its forms are ‘fell’ (past) and ‘fallen’ (past participle).
The snow was falling steadily.
Gas prices usually rise quickly, but fall slowly.
The verb ‘
fell
’ means:
(1) cut down
The city workers were trying to fell the sick tree.
(2) cause someone to fall (knock down)
The boxer felled his opponent with a single punch.
(3) kill
Hundreds of animals were felled during the hunting season.
It’s a regular verb - add -ed in the past and past participle - ‘felled’.
