ESL Student Blog: Laugh At/Laugh With/Laugh About

When we make fun of someone or something, or ridicule them, we laugh at that person/thing:

Everyone laughed at Josie when she said she believed in ghosts.

We laughed at his idea to sail solo across the ocean.

When we share a laugh with someone, we laugh with or laugh along with them:

Her laughter is infectious and she makes other people to laugh with (or laugh along with) her.

The children were laughing at him, not along with him.

We laugh about something to show or acknowledge good humor:

Jen laughed about her mom’s childhood story.

My sister and I laughed about the silly fights we used to have when we were little.
