- The first letter of a suffix attached to a word with a final (silent) e will determine whether the final (silent) e is dropped or retained.
-
- When a suffix begins with a vowel, the final (silent) e is usually dropped:
-
- (-ing) write - writing, bite - biting
(-ish) white - whitish, style - stylish (-ist) type - typist, reserve - reservist (-ance) ignore - ignorance, assure - assurance (-able) believe - believable, desire - desirable (-en) wide - widen, ripe - ripen (-ory) migrate - migratory, advise - advisory (-al) nature - natural, phrase - phrasal
-
- Exception: mile - mileage, age - ageing
-
- However, when e follows c or g, it’s retained before the vowels a and o:
-
- change - changeable
courage - courageous knowledge - knowledgeable notice - noticeable trace - traceable
-
- Before a suffix beginning with a consonant, e is retained in words ending with a final (silent) e:
-
- (-ful) peace - peaceful, care - careful
(-ly) love - lovely, private - privately (-ment) place - placement, manage - management (-tion) celebrate - celebration, locate - location (-less) wire - wireless, point - pointless (-ty) safe - safety, subtle - subtlety (-ry) slave - slavery, brave - bravery
-
- Exceptions: true - truly, whole - wholly
