Level: ESL Intermediate

Objectives: practice collocations related to Olympic Games

Materials: one set of cut-out dominoes per each pair of students

Teacher Notes:

Ask students to make a list of words that are related to Olympics (e.g.: record, medals, ceremony, host, etc.) and write them in the middle of the board. Next, ask to think of words that may come before of after and add them around the original words, e.g.:

Olympic committee/debut/flame/stadium/parade of nations/village/anthem/mascots

opening/closing ceremony

record holder/breaker

medal count/standing

Give one set of dominoes to each pair of students. Students put down the first domino (compete in - host) and look for the next one that joins to it - a word on the left should go with the word on the right of the domino that has been put down.  (The last domino should be committee-event. Also, torch bearer should come before torch relay).

Instructions for Students:

Play a game of dominoes with your partner. Put down the first domino. Look for the domino that joins to it - a word on the left should go with the word on the right of the domino that has been put down.
