Father's Day Songs for an ESL Class

I find here’s a relative lack of ESL adapted materials dedicated to Father’s Day, but luckily a plenty of songs that celebrate the father figure in our lives. The songs listed below have touching yet simple lyrics that can help students express their feelings towards father/child relationship and help reinforce a few language points along the way.

Do your students hold a special place in their hearts and souls for their male role model? Choose a song or put together a compilation of songs - and find out.

Here are my top songs for the beginner and intermediate levels:

ESL Beginner:

''Oh My Papa'' by Eddie Fisher

language point: adjectives

''Papa, Won’t You Dance With Me?'' by Doris Day

language points: won’t you..?, future simple

ESL Intermediate

"The Best Day" by George Strait

language point: could (for possibility), past simple

"Love Without End, Amen" by George Strait

language points: past simple, idioms

"My Father's House" by Bruce Springsteen

language point: past simple, idioms

"Cat’s in the Cradle” by Harry Chaplin

language point: past simple, idioms

“Daddy, What If” by Bobby Bare

language point: 2d conditional
