ESL Lesson Plans: Workplace Skills

Level: High-Intermediate

Objectives: talk about a variety of skills required by people of different jobs and occupations; identify workplace skills and job duties/requirements in newspaper ads

Procedure:

1. Put students in pairs and ask to share information and opinions related to the discussion questions (see below). Take the answers up, clarify any new vocabulary, e.g. transferable skills (skills that can be used in any jobs: organizational, public speaking, listening skills, etc.)

2. Students do Exercise 1 matching workplace skills to their definitions.

3. Students think of examples of jobs that would be suitable for people with the skills listed in Exercise 2. You may want to provide a picture dictionary if applicable.

4. Students read newspaper ads (a-d) in Exercise 3 and decide what positions are being advertised; and identify skills and duties/requirements needed for each position.

5. In pairs, students create a newspaper advertisement for a medical secretary position.
